The Setting: New York, NY, the year 2049 (actually like the present)
The Academy's History: The Atlas Academy was built originally as a college, with gothic style buildings and ornate embellishments, it was a showplace. However few could afford such an expensive education and the school was sold, to a man who by the name Tobias Strange. Mr. Strange was a very wealthy man, though also very odd and antisocial or so it was said about him. He once joked that he named his academy after Atlas as he certainly couldn't name it Strange Academy, though in some people's view the latter might have fit better. Atlas Academy was reopened as a college for gifted individuals both male and female, something during those days that was strictly not done. And before the scandal could die down it was rumored that these gifted students he began enrolling and housing within the campus walls were witches and demons. Mr. Strange and most of his students survived the march of time, the march of terrified city folk, and the chaotic task of teaching his unique students how to accept and control their gifts. The Atlas Academy however was not the first such odd school with odd students, the Valentine Academy had been formed twenty years prior, however Atlas was the first and only such school to be accepted as part of the unique landscape that makes up the city of New York today. Where as Valentine has suffered great battles in the name of the gifted population that exists today, in New York city at least the school and it's students are seen as just another colorful part of the great city. Though there are still those of weak mind who distrust and fear them, for the most part Atlas is left alone. It is only on occasions when those who live within it's walls venture out into the city that possible incidents tend to happen. That is why over the years Mr. Strange has updated the campus repeatedly, renovated it and tried to bring all that he can to the campus to keep the students within the safety of it's walls. Yes Mr. Strange is still alive today, as he was after all a gifted individual himself. Though Mr. Strange does survive and will go on doing so for perhaps centuries to come, he does not run the school, he much prefers to leave that to the wonderful staff he hires, instead he likes to putter around campus as professor of history with a lifetime tenorship. And the school now takes students ages 14 and up rather than simply college age students, however it is still a boarding school. And in a city like New York it is highly suggested that all students live on campus.
The Gifted: The gifted are human beings who for whatever reason develop an abnormal ability, usually at the onset of puberty. These abilities differ in intensity in each individual. (There is a list of abilities to look at on the site under info)

It is now the year 2050 and with August comes the beginning of a new school year. Students come and students go, but the memories made at Atlas will last a lifetime.

SOME USEFUL INFO ABOUT GIFTED PEOPLE
Negation Devices: Negation devices are objects that emit a certain bio energy frequency that disrupts the certain synapses in the specific portion of the brain that is active in those people who are gifted, essentially 'temporarily turning off' their ability. These devices can be in objects as large as free standing light posts to cover whole areas, or be as small as a stone worn on a string round the neck as a necklace or on a bracelette around the wrist. The bracelette is the most common and is issued free of charge by the school and various government programs. However some gifted people can also choose to have a negation device custom made to their own specifications.
Pregnancy: Pregnant mothers are given a binding serum at some point during the pregnancy, usually between 3 and 6 months, that binds the mother's powers. Hence any power she would be displaying until the child's birth would be the baby's power. This is done because many many mothers and children died in the old days before the invention of the binding serum due to complications between the mothers and babys abilities, commonly displayed as a severe energy drain in the mother until she and the child simply fall asleep and never wake up.
After Birth: The child will not display an ability, it wont gain it's ability until those chemical changes happen during the onset of puberty. But the mother who has been displaying the child's ability during the pregnancy can have random echoes of the child's ability for up to a week after the birth. A week after the birth the binding serum given to the mother begins to wear off during the chemical changes in the brain most commonly refered to as post-partum, and eventually the mother will regain her own full ability and never be able to tap into the child's ability again.
